Science, CBD and Chronic Pain

No one is a stranger to pain. Even little children at one time or the other experience pain when they fall or get knocked down while playing. Pain in itself is not permanent and soon fades with time and proper treatment. However, mild pain cannot be compared with chronic pain which refers to a persistent and long-lasting pain that affects an individual for months or even years. The rising trend of chronic pain has made it one of the primary reasons individuals seek medical attention. In this light, it becomes necessary to consider an effective way of combating this condition and bringing relief to hundreds of individuals suffering from similar symptoms.

What Is The Cause Of Chronic Pain?
• An internal or external injury may cause chronic pain and inflammation, and neuropathy
• Chronic pain may also be a symptom of an illness or degenerative conditions such as fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, etc.
• Other health problems such as sleep disturbance and fatigue may also contribute to the development of chronic pain.
Suffice to say, there is no particular cause of chronic pain as it may even be impossible to identify a reason at all. Irrespective of this fact, chronic pain has the ability to inhibit mobility, reduce strength and stability, as well as affect the stamina of the affected individual and as such, it requires an effective solution.

Can CBD Be Used In The Treatment Of Chronic Pain?
Cannabidiol or CBD is a compound extracted from the cannabis and hemp plant. It is often derived from the Cannabis sativa L. Plant which has a high CBD content.
Extensive research has been carried out on the use of Cannabinoids in treating painful conditions, and it has been discovered that by activating the CB2 receptor in the body, chronic pain can be effectively managed.
Interestingly, CBD, when ingested, interacts with the cannabidiol receptors in the Endocannabinoid system and attaches to this specific receptor (CB2). CBD can also be helpful in activating the glycine receptors in the central nervous system which aid in the reduction of neuropathic as well as chronic inflammatory pain. The presence of prostaglandins and other inflammatory factors inhibits the functions of these receptors and increases sensitivity to pain. CBD has the ability to reactivate these inactive receptors, thereby reducing pain hypersensitivity.
The suitability of CBD benefiting those who experience chronic pain is aided by the report of a 2012 study where it was stated that “systemic and intrathecal administration of cannabidiol (CBD), a major non-psychoactive component of marijuana, and its modified derivatives significantly suppress chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain without causing apparent analgesic tolerance. These cannabinoids may represent a novel class of therapeutic agents for the treatment of chronic pain and other diseases…”
Also, a 2014 study stated that, “The Endocannabinoid system has been elucidated over the last several years, demonstrating a significant interface with pain homeostasis. Exogenous (plant-based) cannabinoids have been demonstrated to be effective in a range of experimental neuropathic pain models, and there is mounting evidence for therapeutic use in human neuropathic pain conditions".
Finally..
Irrespective of the general opinion on the use of marijuana and hemp plants, the immense health benefits of CBD, backed by adequate scientific research provides us with a new and effective tool for the management of chronic and debilitating pain.
